HISTORY OF THE UTAH PROVO MISSION
 
    The Utah Provo Mission was formed in 1978. Missionary work in the Utah South Area had actually  began many years previous in the 1890`s. Missionaries were sent to the Ute and Navajo nations to teach the restored gospel message. Missionaries were sent in companionships, two by two. Success was immediate and many Ute and Navajo people embraced the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Today the Utah Provo Mission oversees the teaching of the gospel in Central and Southern Utah and includes:
 
                * 170 Stakes and over 1500 Wards and Branches.

                * Timpanogos, Manti, Provo, Monticello, St.George and Vernal Temples.

       Timpanogos Temple, dedicated in 1997 and situated in the Utah Valley

 
         Manti Temple, dedicatted 1n 1888 and situated in the Sanpete Valley
 

         Provo Temple, dedicated in 1977 and situated in Central Utah Valley
 

         Monticello Temple, dedicated in 1998 and situated in the Four Corners
                               area of Utah
 

          Vernal Temple, dedicated 1998 and situated in the Uintah Basin
 
 
 
                      * Cove Fort Historic site at the I-15 and I-70 Junction.

 

Cove fort was originally built by the Mormons as a trading and travel post between northern and southern Utah. Until the treaty of the Weatern Territories was formed mormons and travellers alike were under threat from Indian attacks. Cove fort served as a stop off point and protective facility. Today it serves as a museum for the general public.

               * The Utah South Area has one of the highest rates of growth of any area of the church. At least 50,000 adults moved into the State of Utah in 1994.

            * The Utah Provo Mission is currently divided into 10 Zones, 25 Districts and over 70 proselyting areas. The Mission averages between 160-180 single missionaries plus the senior couples serving in the Cove Fort, Mission Office, Navajo Reservation, Gunnison Prison and St.George Visitors Centre.

            * The Utah Provo Mission achieved 1985 convert baptisms in 1999, and is working towards a goal of 2000 for the year 2000.
